[A nerdy twink is looking deceptively better now that he has changed into a decent outfit and you can't see every rib on him in a fifty mile radius.
Except for the unwell face. Hard to get rid of that.
Unfortunately, the found crutch doesn't keep him from almost running into her because he is too busy excitedly trying to scroll through the IRIS before he can sit down somewhere.]
[HELLO, NO. He looks surprised, then starts to reassure her he wasn't just playing games, but then the hand is there.
Hesitantly, like he thinks this is some kinda trick, he reaches out to shake her hand after shifting the crutch over. There's no cooties, it's fine, he has on a glove.]
Hextech. Hexgates, more specifically. They transpose matter from one point to another. We use them to teleport airships and zeppelins quickly from one city to the next.
It's a tower powered by refined hex crystals. Runic magic integrated with technology. The tower establishes a point of origin for the magic gate. Entering one portal pushes you out of another. It--
[Uses his armpit to lean on the crutch, then uses his hands to aaaaaalmost put the palms together.]
If our world is a plane represented by a flat piece of paper, and it's folded, you could poke a hole through and go from one side of the paper to the next. You bypass the whole journey over the land. That's a Hexgate.
[oh, she will listen to this. she's not extremely tech nerdy, but enough that she can follow. magic doesn't exist in her universe, but psychic abilities and technology are somewhat hard to distinguish from magic.]
I see. I'm not familiar with how magic works, but there are similar types of technology that I'm aware of. Generally, what's used to travel in space over long distances is a little like that, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to explain it in enough detail to be interesting to you.
We use a tachyon drive - it's powered by particles that can travel faster than light. When you engage those particles you enter a wormhole that permits you to travel great distances nearly instantaneously; distances that could otherwise take years or centuries to traverse. This ship almost certainly has that capability as well - we couldn't be out here somewhere this remote otherwise.
[The way his eyes get the biggest, hungriest laser-focus when she starts talking. He's listening so intently, he probably forgets to even breath because he doesn't want to not hear what she's saying!!]
That is similar to Hexgates, but with more reach... It is something my partner and I would be interested in accomplishing later.
[Slaps intergalactic travel onto League of Legends.]
Yes, I had assumed this ship had... some sort of portable teleportation gateway. I would love to see it actually.
[........He has a towel from the laundry which is clean but kinda sprinkle because garbage, and he has it...... opened and lifted really high up in front of his turned away face when she appears in the scrap yard.
LISTEN. If he can wait on Sidon, he can wait in her. Just. Sidon is not the same.]
[that's very cute. she's coming back dazed, having barely had time to be conscious before she died and came back with fig leaf censorship. it takes her a second to even realize she's naked and he's embarrassed about that, but she'll take the towel and wrap it around her. also yeah she does have a bunch of the stupid tattoos.]
...So, that's efficient. Better than the med pods.
Well. I don't know that I want to hold onto these memories. It's one thing to go through your own trauma, but it's another to go through someone else's. What's the point?
[listen, she's not clueless what this is about, either. it feels weird to talk too much about someone else's memories, but also it literally happened to her and also it's his boo so it's probably fine.]
...The journal, mostly. We had it from the start, and started getting obsessed with it. I started feeling like Sidon was going to try and take it from me and I had to stop him. The eyes came after a little while, but made things worse.
[Imagine Lucien had kept all this a secret somehow. But he understands, and is not interested in ratshaking everything out of her.
Mostly because he already knows a lot of it. Finally, he chanced a glance back and then looks at her when he realizes she is clothed.]
He does. He said it appeared a while back. He said the mages are silent here, so... I don't know if the journal is the same way or not. The Hex Core so far... is also quiet. So...
I wish I could help him, but... I'm pretty powerless, and he is pretty stubborn. I imagine he may still be using it desperately.
For us, it wasn't exactly easy to decide to get rid of it. Something bad happened on the second day and I think we all felt like we were done and wanted nothing to do with it, but we still couldn't resist looking at it, and when we woke up the next morning it had gotten worse.
I don't know. Maybe he should throw it out the airlock.
[He doesn't want to be able to understand that, but he does. He commiserates with the idea of something very powerful and tantalizing and dangerous just sitting there near you, begging to be used.]
He definitely should throw it out of the airlock. [Hmm.] ...Do you think he'd... put it in the garbage? I'd throw it in the recycling room for him.
[she has to consider that for a moment, frowning.]
I don't know. I think he's more likely to listen to you about that than me. If it were me, I'd be desperate to get rid of it while I still could, but who knows how he feels about it.
If I know him, then I think he is probably clinging to it only because he thinks he will be able to use its power to do something about all this if the power happened to return.
Because he is... [saying this like he has almost never said this word in his life, the cursing virginity of it:] ...a dumbass.

Oops! A little distracted?

The near miss startles him into focusing, and his expression is sheepishly apologetic.]
Sorry about that. I--guess I am... Just...
[Raises his arm and wrist in indication.]
no subject
No apology necessary. I'm sure those games are pretty addictive. [he probably wasn't playing games.] Margaret Encino, we haven't met.

Viktor. It's a pleasure.
no subject
Likewise. It has been a whirlwind, meeting so many new people.
no subject
It has, yes.
[This has been a harrowing experience for someone with social anxiety.]
You seem to be... taking it well, though.
no subject
This isn't ideal, but we'll find a way to work out what to do. Besides, I think the place I'm from is more similar to this than it is for many of you.
no subject
Oh...? Your world has advanced technology? Or do you mean... space travel?

I... don't mind. I enjoy learning new things. Even a shorthand explanation could give rise to new, innovative ideas.

Um, welcome back...

I'm not sure if we should start... um, devaluing the gravity of death, but yes. It's a lot better.
[He keeps his head turned away until she is wrapped up, and then he finally looks a her.]
Feeling better?
no subject
We've gone far enough still being here at all. I'm comfortable continuing to devalue the gravity of death.
[she's not sure how she feels, but that means she would prefer to act like she feels great.]
Much better.
no subject
[(vash voice)
He smiles weakly at her.]
It's rough, I know. I'm sorry.
no subject
...It is. I don't like letting things get to me, especially when they're designed to. But it wasn't very fun.
no subject
It's okay if they do, you know. I think it's best if they do. So you do not forget. Like the death.

Well. I don't know that I want to hold onto these memories. It's one thing to go through your own trauma, but it's another to go through someone else's. What's the point?

[Maybe at the cost of some personal mental health which isn't good. It's fine.
He will take her back to the pods so she can get some clothes in privacy.]
They were bad?
no subject
Pretty bad, yes. We all went crazy and killed each other.
no subject
He is standing off out of the way with his back to her because he is a bottom, but these things are clear on what of his face can be seen.]
Because of the Eyes?

[she maybe means it slightly less fondly but no less sincerely.]
It wouldn't be forcing you to hang onto it if it didn't need that for something.
