Hextech. Hexgates, more specifically. They transpose matter from one point to another. We use them to teleport airships and zeppelins quickly from one city to the next.
It's a tower powered by refined hex crystals. Runic magic integrated with technology. The tower establishes a point of origin for the magic gate. Entering one portal pushes you out of another. It--

If our world is a plane represented by a flat piece of paper, and it's folded, you could poke a hole through and go from one side of the paper to the next. You bypass the whole journey over the land. That's a Hexgate.
[oh, she will listen to this. she's not extremely tech nerdy, but enough that she can follow. magic doesn't exist in her universe, but psychic abilities and technology are somewhat hard to distinguish from magic.]
I see. I'm not familiar with how magic works, but there are similar types of technology that I'm aware of. Generally, what's used to travel in space over long distances is a little like that, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to explain it in enough detail to be interesting to you.
We use a tachyon drive - it's powered by particles that can travel faster than light. When you engage those particles you enter a wormhole that permits you to travel great distances nearly instantaneously; distances that could otherwise take years or centuries to traverse. This ship almost certainly has that capability as well - we couldn't be out here somewhere this remote otherwise.

I... don't mind. I enjoy learning new things. Even a shorthand explanation could give rise to new, innovative ideas.
